Bring Your Outdoor Spaces to Life with Bell Lighting

Bell outdoor lighting combines practical illumination with fittings designed to complement entrances, patios, pathways, walls and landscaped areas. Choosing the right fitting means considering its location, IP rating, light direction, finish and whether automatic PIR operation is required.

Outdoor Wall Lights

Illuminate Entrances and Features

Fixed and up-and-down wall lights can provide practical illumination around doors and pathways while also creating attractive patterns of light across exterior walls.

Garden Spike Lights

Highlight Plants and Landscaping

Adjustable spike lights can be positioned in suitable soft ground to illuminate planting, trees, architectural features and pathways.

Outdoor Lanterns

Traditional Exterior Character

Bell Retro lanterns introduce a more traditional appearance to entrances and exterior walls, with standard and PIR sensor options available within the range.

Weather Protection

Understanding Outdoor IP Ratings

The IP rating describes the enclosure’s protection against solid objects and moisture. Bell outdoor fittings within this collection include different ratings, so each product must be checked for the intended location.

IP44

Protected Exterior Positions

IP44 fittings provide protection against solid objects larger than 1mm and splashing water. Suitability still depends on the mounting position and product instructions.

IP54

Additional Dust Protection

IP54 fittings provide limited dust-ingress protection together with protection against water splashes from different directions.

IP65

Greater Outdoor Protection

IP65 fittings are dust-tight and protected against water jets, subject to correct installation and the manufacturer’s stated mounting conditions.

An IP rating is maintained only when the fitting, seals, cable entry and glands are installed correctly. A higher rating does not permit installation underwater unless the product is specifically designed and approved for that purpose.

Lamp Selection

Does the Outdoor Fitting Include a Bulb?

Several Bell Luna wall and spike fittings use replaceable GU10 lamps, while Bell Retro lanterns may require a compatible bulb to be purchased separately. Check each product description carefully.

GU10 Outdoor Fittings

Choose the Lamp Separately

A replaceable GU10 format lets you select the colour temperature, beam angle and lumen output, subject to the fitting’s maximum wattage and physical lamp dimensions.

  • Check whether a GU10 lamp is included
  • Observe the fitting’s maximum permitted wattage
  • Confirm bulb length and diameter
  • Select dimmable lamps only when suitable
Lantern Bulbs

Balance Appearance and Output

Where the bulb remains visible through the lantern, consider a clear filament lamp for traditional character or an opal lamp for softer light diffusion.

  • Confirm the required cap type
  • Check the available internal space
  • Choose an appropriate lumen output
  • Consider a warm-white decorative finish

Where the fitting requires a separate lamp, browse our Bell GU10 and MR16 bulb collection for compatible options, subject to the fitting specification.

Automatic Lighting

Standard or PIR Outdoor Lighting?

Standard Fitting

Controlled by Your Circuit

Standard outdoor lights are suitable when operation is controlled by a wall switch, timer, photocell or compatible external control system.

PIR Sensor Fitting

Movement-Activated Light

A PIR version can activate automatically when movement is detected within its coverage area, making it useful around entrances, side passages and access routes.

Before installing a PIR light, consider nearby pavements, roads, plants, animals and heat sources. These can cause unwanted activation if they fall within the detection area.

Create the Atmosphere

Outdoor Colour Temperature and Light Direction

Warm White

Welcoming and Relaxed

Warm-white lighting works well around entrances, patios, planting and traditional lanterns where a comfortable domestic atmosphere is preferred.

Cool White

Clean and Practical

Cool-white light provides a crisper appearance suited to access routes, modern wall lights and task-focused exterior areas.

Directional Light

Place Light Where It Matters

Up-and-down and adjustable spike fittings allow more controlled illumination of walls, planting and features without lighting the entire surrounding area.

Position outdoor lighting carefully to avoid shining into neighbouring homes, bedroom windows, roads or directly into people’s eyes. Aim fittings downward or towards the intended feature where practical.

Common Questions

Bell Outdoor Lighting FAQs

What IP rating should an outdoor light have?

The required IP rating depends on the location and level of exposure. Bell outdoor fittings include different IP ratings, so check the individual product specification and installation instructions for the intended position.

Do Bell outdoor wall lights include the bulb?

Not all models include a bulb. Several Bell Luna wall and spike fittings use replaceable GU10 lamps, while lanterns may also require a suitable lamp to be purchased separately. Check the individual product description.

What is an up-and-down outdoor wall light?

An up-and-down wall light directs light both above and below the fitting, creating an architectural effect across the wall as well as providing local illumination.

How does a PIR outdoor light work?

A PIR sensor detects changes in infrared energy caused by movement within its coverage area and switches the light on according to its settings. Range and adjustment options vary between models.

Can garden spike lights be moved?

The spike position may be changed within a suitable landscaped area, but the cabling and electrical installation must remain safe, protected and compliant. Isolate the supply before making changes.

Should I choose warm or cool-white outdoor lighting?

Warm white creates a softer and more welcoming domestic atmosphere. Cool white provides a cleaner appearance for modern exteriors and practical access lighting. The best choice depends on the setting.
