Choose Emergency Lighting Around Its Purpose

Knightsbridge emergency lighting includes products that identify exits and fittings that provide illumination when the normal lighting supply fails. These serve different purposes within an installation, so start with what each location needs rather than choosing by appearance alone.

Knightsbridge is the lighting and electrical accessories brand from ML Accessories. Our collection brings together LED exit signs, emergency LED fittings and conversion kits, helping you compare products for new installations, replacements and compatible upgrades.

LED Exit Signs

Exit signs identify exits and indicate the direction of travel. Compare the legend, viewing distance, visibility from the approach and mounting arrangement for the intended position.

Emergency Bulkheads and Battens

Emergency fittings provide backup illumination. Compare emergency light output and distribution for corridors, stairways and other areas covered by the lighting design.

Emergency Conversion Kits

Approved conversion kits add emergency functionality to compatible luminaires. Check the exact fitting, kit and installation requirements before selecting an accessory.

Compare Operating Modes, Duration and Emergency Output

Emergency operating mode affects how a fitting behaves during normal use. A maintained fitting can remain illuminated while mains power is available and continue operating during a supply failure. A non-maintained fitting normally illuminates only when the normal supply fails. Some products support more than one operating arrangement; check the model and wiring instructions.

Compare the rated emergency duration with the requirements of the installation. Do not assume that every product has the same backup period or that its emergency brightness matches its normal light output.

For emergency bulkheads and battens, use the specified emergency output and photometric information when assessing coverage. For exit signs, check the stated viewing distance and suitable legend. An illuminated sign should not be assumed to provide sufficient lighting for the surrounding escape route.

Also check environmental protection, mounting position and dimensions. A fitting intended for a dry indoor corridor may have different requirements from one installed in an exposed entrance or service area.

Select Compatible Kits and Plan for Testing

An emergency conversion kit must be specified for the luminaire it will serve. Match the manufacturer’s compatibility information to the exact product code, rather than assuming that a kit works with every Knightsbridge downlight, batten or bulkhead.

Check which components are supplied, including the battery, emergency control equipment and any indicator or test accessories. Allow for their dimensions and installation clearances. A conversion kit is an accessory and should not be mistaken for a complete emergency light fitting.

Testing arrangements should also be considered when choosing products. Conventional and self-test models have different features, and a self-test function does not remove the need to inspect the installation, respond to faults and keep appropriate records.

Select against the lighting design: Product features alone do not establish that an installation provides the required coverage. Have a competent emergency lighting professional confirm product selection, positioning, wiring, commissioning and maintenance arrangements.

Emergency Lighting FAQs

What is the difference between an exit sign and an emergency light?

An exit sign identifies an exit or indicates the direction of travel. An emergency light provides illumination when the normal lighting supply fails. Some products combine functions, but an illuminated sign should not be assumed to provide sufficient escape-route lighting.

What do maintained and non-maintained mean?

A maintained fitting can operate during normal mains-powered use and continue illuminating during a supply failure. A non-maintained fitting normally illuminates only when the normal supply fails. Check the individual product for supported modes and wiring requirements.

Is emergency light output the same as normal light output?

Not necessarily. Emergency operation can use a different output from normal mains-powered operation. Compare the stated emergency performance and photometric information rather than using the normal lumen figure to assess emergency coverage.

Can I convert any LED fitting to emergency operation?

No. Use a conversion kit approved for the exact luminaire and follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions. Compatibility, available space and electrical requirements must be checked. Sharing the Knightsbridge brand does not make all fittings and kits interchangeable.

Does an emergency conversion kit include the light fitting?

Do not assume it does. Conversion kits are usually supplied as accessories for compatible luminaires. Check the listing for included components and whether the fitting must be purchased separately.

How do I choose an LED exit sign?

Check the required legend and arrow direction, viewing distance, mounting arrangement and visibility from the approach. Also compare operating mode, emergency duration and environmental suitability against the installation design.

Does self-test emergency lighting still need inspection?

Yes. Self-test features can automate specified checks, but the installation still needs inspection, review of fault indications, maintenance and appropriate records. Follow the product instructions and the maintenance arrangements for the premises.
