Choosing a replacement bulb
Which Bell bulb shape do you need?
The shape affects how a bulb fits, distributes light and looks inside the luminaire. Start by matching the existing shape, but remember to check the cap, voltage and dimensions separately.
Bulb shape and bulb cap are not the same thing
A candle, golf-ball or GLS bulb may be available with several different caps. Match both the bulb shape and the full cap code printed on the existing lamp before ordering.

GLS bulbs
The familiar traditional light-bulb shape used throughout the home. GLS lamps provide broad, general illumination and are available in multiple brightness levels and finishes.
Common uses: pendants, table lamps, floor lamps and enclosed fittings.
Check: cap, overall height, diameter, lumens and whether dimming is required.

Candle bulbs
A narrow decorative shape commonly chosen for fittings in which the lamp remains visible. Clear, frosted and filament styles create different appearances.
Common uses: chandeliers, wall lights, decorative pendants and bedside lamps.
Check: E14, B15 or another cap, plus the maximum permitted lamp dimensions.

Golf-ball bulbs
Compact round bulbs that provide useful general light where a standard GLS lamp may appear too large or may not fit within the available space.

GU10 and MR16
Directional reflector lamps designed to concentrate light into a defined beam. Although GU10 and MR16 lamps look similar, they use different caps and normally operate at different voltages.
Common uses: ceiling spotlights, recessed fittings, track lights and directional displays.
Check: GU10 or GU5.3 cap, voltage, beam angle, lamp length and transformer compatibility.

Capsule bulbs
Small lamps designed for compact fittings where there is limited internal space. Bell capsule options can include G4 and G9 formats with different voltages and pin arrangements.

Decorative bulbs
Decorative bulbs are designed to be seen. Globe, squirrel-cage, tubular and statement filament lamps can change the appearance and atmosphere of the entire fitting.
Common uses: exposed pendants, restaurants, bars, feature fittings and design-led interiors.
Check: dimensions, glass finish, filament appearance, colour temperature and lumen output.

Check the connection
How to identify your bulb cap
The cap is the part of the bulb that connects to the lampholder. Match the complete cap code rather than relying on appearance alone, as similar-looking lamps may not be electrically or physically compatible.
Bayonet and screw caps
These are widely used on GLS, candle, golf-ball and decorative household bulbs.
Bayonet cap
A 22mm cap with two side pins. Insert the bulb, press gently and turn to secure it in the lampholder.
Small bayonet cap
A smaller 15mm bayonet fitting commonly found on candle, golf-ball, pygmy and compact decorative lamps.
Edison screw
A 27mm threaded screw cap used on many GLS, globe, squirrel-cage and larger decorative bulbs.
Small Edison screw
A smaller 14mm threaded cap often used on candles, golf-ball bulbs, pygmy lamps and compact fittings.
Spotlight and capsule caps
Pin spacing, pin shape and operating voltage are especially important with spotlight and capsule lamps.
Twist-lock spotlight
Two short pins with enlarged ends. GU10 lamps insert into the holder and twist into place.
MR16 two-pin cap
Two thin straight pins spaced approximately 5.3mm apart. These lamps are commonly used with a compatible low-voltage transformer.
Loop-pin capsule
A compact capsule cap with two looped contacts. G9 lamps are commonly used in mains-voltage decorative fittings.
Straight-pin capsule
Two fine straight pins spaced approximately 4mm apart. G4 lamps are typically used in compatible low-voltage fittings.

GU10 and MR16 lamps are not interchangeable
A GU10 spotlight is generally designed for a mains-voltage twist-lock holder. An MR16 lamp commonly uses a GU5.3 two-pin cap and operates through compatible low-voltage control gear. Do not change between them solely because the bulbs have a similar shape.
Understanding LED specifications
Lumens, watts and light colour explained
LED packaging contains several different measurements. Lumens tell you how much light a bulb produces, watts describe its energy use, and Kelvin indicates whether the light appears warm or cool.
Lumens measure brightness
A higher lumen figure generally means more visible light. Compare lumens when choosing how bright you want the replacement bulb or fitting to be.
Watts measure energy use
Wattage tells you how much electrical power the product uses. Modern LEDs can produce comparable light using much less power than traditional lamps.
Kelvin describes light colour
Lower Kelvin values look warmer and more golden. Higher values appear cooler, crisper and closer to daylight.
How many lumens do you need?
If you are replacing an older bulb, use the lumen output or stated equivalent wattage as a starting point. The figures shown here are approximate because lamp design, beam angle, shade type and room surfaces all affect the result.
A decorative bulb may intentionally produce softer light, while a task area or main room fitting may need a higher output. Multiple bulbs within one fitting should also be considered together.

Which colour temperature should you choose?
Colour temperature changes the atmosphere of a room without changing the actual colour of the fitting or bulb.
1800K Candle-like
Very warm amber light for intimate feature lighting, restaurants and decorative interiors.
2200K Extra warm
A rich golden effect suited to exposed filaments, hospitality spaces and relaxed rooms.
2700K Warm white
A familiar household light colour for living rooms, bedrooms, dining areas and general domestic use.
3000K Warm white
Clean but still welcoming light for kitchens, bathrooms, hallways and modern interiors.
4000K Cool white
A crisper neutral appearance for workspaces, garages, offices, kitchens and commercial interiors.
6000–6500K Daylight
A noticeably cool light used where a bright daylight-style appearance is preferred.
What does CRI mean?
CRI stands for Colour Rendering Index. It indicates how naturally colours appear under a light source compared with an appropriate reference source.
Higher colour rendering can be valuable where the appearance of food, furnishings, artwork, merchandise or surface finishes is important. Always check the individual product’s stated CRI.
Do you need a dimmable LED?
A standard non-dimmable LED should not be used on a dimming circuit. If brightness adjustment is required, select a lamp specifically marked as dimmable and use compatible LED control gear.

Buying spotlights? Check the beam angle too
Two GU10 lamps with the same lumen output can create very different results. A narrower beam concentrates light onto a smaller area, while a wider beam spreads it more evenly across the room. Choose the beam angle according to the fitting spacing and the area you want to illuminate.

Choosing complete Bell LED fittings
Bell also offers complete luminaires for domestic, outdoor, commercial and industrial applications. These require different checks from a simple replacement bulb.
Replacement-lamp fitting
This type of luminaire accepts a separate bulb with a defined cap. The lamp can usually be removed and replaced without changing the complete fitting.
Integrated LED fitting

Bell lighting compatibility checklist
Work through these eight checks before ordering a replacement bulb or complete fitting. Not every point applies to every product, but together they cover the most common compatibility issues.

Confirm the product type
Decide whether you are replacing a removable bulb or the complete light fitting. Integrated LED fittings do not normally accept a separate replacement lamp.

Match the complete cap code
Check markings such as B22, E27, B15, E14, GU10, GU5.3, G9 or G4. Do not rely solely on the bulb’s general shape.

Check the operating voltage
Confirm whether the lamp or fitting uses mains voltage or a lower-voltage supply through compatible control gear or a transformer.

Measure the available space
Compare the lamp’s height and diameter or the fitting’s cut-out, depth, length and width. Similar products can have different physical dimensions.

Compare brightness in lumens
Use lumens to compare light output. Also consider the size of the room, number of lights, mounting height and whether the light is for ambience or practical tasks.

Select the light colour
Choose an appropriate Kelvin value, from extra-warm decorative light through to cooler white or daylight-style illumination.

Confirm dimming and controls
Check whether dimming, PIR detection, a photocell, microwave sensing, emergency operation or another control function is required.

Check the installation environment
Confirm the required IP rating, enclosure suitability, temperature conditions and whether the product is intended for indoor, bathroom, outdoor or industrial use.
Keep the original product details
Before disposing of an old bulb or fitting, photograph all printed markings and the luminaire label. A manufacturer reference, cap code, voltage, wattage or dimension can make identifying the correct replacement much easier.
For the best match, record: Product code, cap, voltage, wattage, lumens, Kelvin rating, physical dimensions and whether the circuit is dimmed.
Common mistakes to avoid
Several products can look almost identical while having significantly different specifications.
LED wattage measures energy consumption, not brightness. Compare the lumen output as well.
They can share a similar reflector shape but use different caps and commonly operate at different voltages.
The lamp, driver and dimmer must all be suitable for dimming and compatible with one another.
The correct cap does not guarantee that a bulb will fit inside the shade, housing or available ceiling void.
A product selected for a dry room may not provide suitable protection for bathrooms, wet areas or exterior use.
Lamp life, output, dimensions and features can vary between individual products within the same Bell range.

Which Bell range is designed for improved energy efficiency?
Bell Platinum contains ultra-efficient LED lamps designed to produce useful light while consuming less energy. The most appropriate lamp still depends on the required cap, brightness, dimensions, colour temperature and application.
Are Bell LED bulbs dimmable?
Selected Bell LED bulbs are dimmable, but not every product is suitable for dimming. Choose a lamp specifically marked as dimmable and confirm that the connected LED dimmer is compatible with the lamp type and total circuit load.
What Bell light colour should I choose?
Extra-warm 1800K or 2200K light suits decorative and atmospheric spaces. Warm-white 2700K is popular in living rooms and bedrooms, while 3000K provides a slightly cleaner warm appearance. Cool-white 4000K is often chosen for kitchens, offices, garages and work areas. Higher daylight-style values produce a noticeably cooler effect.
Can I replace an MR16 bulb with a GU10?
Not as a direct lamp replacement. A GU10 normally uses a twist-lock cap and operates at mains voltage, while an MR16 commonly uses a GU5.3 two-pin cap with compatible low-voltage control gear. A qualified person should assess any proposed alteration to the fitting or electrical supply.
Which Bell lights can be used outdoors?
Choose a Bell fitting specifically intended for exterior installation and confirm that its IP rating, construction and installation instructions are suitable for the exact location. The required protection can differ between sheltered entrances and areas exposed directly to rain or other weather conditions.
What is the difference between an LED bulb and an integrated LED fitting?
An LED bulb is a removable lamp installed into a compatible holder. In an integrated LED fitting, the light source forms part of the complete luminaire. Integrated products should be compared by their complete dimensions, lumen output, colour temperature, controls and rated life rather than by a separate replacement-bulb cap.
